How to care for your leather bag – a guide to longevity
Share
A leather tote bag is more than just an accessory. It is a sustainable choice, an expression of minimalism and craftsmanship, and with the right care, it can become a faithful companion for many years.
At Heim Studios we use deadstock materials from Italy to create The Sail Bag, a handmade limited edition bag, produced in Norway. ( read more about why we use deadstock here )
In this September guide, we offer you the best maintenance tips to keep your handmade leather bag in top quality. All in a style that reflects our aesthetic: clean, calm, and poetic.
Why maintenance matters
By taking care of your bag, you show consideration for both craftsmanship and the environment. A leather tote bag like The Sail Bag is designed to age beautifully, with a patina that only time and use can create.
1. Weather proofing – protect your deadstock leather
- Weather proof the bag before use and at the change of season with an impregnation spray intended for leather or suede.
- This protects against Norwegian weather, preserves color and extends its lifespan.
2. Storage – let your leather bag rest with respect
- Store in a cotton or cloth bag. Plastic can cause discoloration and moisture.
- Stuff the bag with tissue paper or soft fabric to maintain its shape, especially important for a brown leather bag or tote bag that has some structure.
3. Cleaning – gentle care for suede
- Remove dust with a dry, soft brush.
- For stains: use only lukewarm water on a cloth. Avoid chemical cleaners.
- For suede: use a special brush to restore the fibers.
4. Repairs – long life over cheap consumption
- We deliberately produce small quantities of The Sail Bag, both for quality and sustainability.
- Discover a worn strap or tear? Visit a local shoemaker or leather specialist and ask us for advice.
5. Use – let the bag live
- A bag only gets better with use. Every tear, crease and change in color becomes a marker of your daily history with your leather bag from Heim Studios. (need styling tips? read here )
